When Mayors Go Bad

Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and a former top aide are charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice, all tied to their testimony in a civil trial last year. At the heart of the case: steamy text messages contradicting their claim that they didn’t have a romantic relationship. Recently, Kilpatrick spent the night in a one-man jail cell with no TV and a phone only for collect calls, the consequence of violating his bond in a criminal case. You see, when you are out on bond, you have to notify the court if you intend to leave the state. Now granted, Windsor, Ontario is just a few steps over a bridge… but it is Canada!

Is it just me or does it seem that US cities with disgustingly high crime and violence attract corrupt mayors? Hell, DC’s ex mayor smoked crack with his girlfriend in motels and got re-elected. At least Kilpatrick has a bit updated fashion sense…
