Girls With Guns

My 11 year old is not this fast. But she can strip and rebuild a variety of weapons with just as much enthusiasm!

Harris County Contract Deputy Program

Harris County is where the city of Houston is located. Pretty much all of the area that is not covered by city police departments is covered by the Sheriff’s department. Since the early 1970’s, the Sheriff has supplemented the budget and the coverage by offering a contract deputy program. Essentially, communities, school districts, municipal utility districts, etc. could pony up money to acquire the dedication of 70% of a Deputy’s time and coverage. The fee runs a little less than $60,000 per year per Deputy. The program has been found to be Constitutional and effective. Deputies want to participate in the program. But it has also left regular patrol positions vacant. And now some folks are crying foul. They claim that only the “rich” get superior coverage.

In the spirit of full disclosure. I am a past President of a homeowners association that hired (and still hires) a contract deputy. I also live in a municipal utility district (MUD) that has an above ground water processing facility that is publicly accesible. As such 9/11 legislation and funding programs provide an additional contract deputy for this area. This area still has crime, but it has less crime because of the contract deputies. And I am willing to continue paying for this program through my association dues. IMO, Harris County should fill any budgeted vacancies immediately. But anyone who is willing to pay for extra patrols should get extra patrols. It’s the closes we can get to an officer on the beat…
