Talk Shows At Night

David Letterman has his own deal that gets around the writer’s strike. Jay Leno has decided to retire from The Tonight Show next year. Conan O’Brien has been tapped to replace Leno and has already plunked down over $10 million on a new home in anticipation of the move. Does anyone really care? To my eye, the late night genre’ went splat just before Carson retired. Oh sure, Letterman had a few bizzaro shows that garnered interest. But the ritual of evening news, dinner, sitcom, drama, tuck kids in, head off to bed and choose between sex or talk show… died a long time ago. What killed it? Was it implosion or indifference? Too many other entertainment choices or the possibility that it is no longer relevant or funny?
