One Man Can Piss Off The World

Richard Arens wanted to have his name recorded for posterity. So this idiot, on Wednesday, bid $100,000 for a 1,000 barrels of oil on the New York market. This was the first recorded purchase at $100 a barrel. Arens later sold the contract at a $600 loss. But now oil is constantly flirting with the number. What a putz.

No Luck For Chuck

If you read my recent post on Chuck Rosenthal, the Harris County butt munch, you know that I have a less than high opinion of him. So where do we stand? He stood fast and said that he would not drop out of the election race for District Attorney. He dropped out. This much was predictable. What was a bit of a stunner is that Rosie now has to show up in court as a defendant. At the center of much of this brouhaha is a bunch of lovie dovie emails that Rosie sent to his secretary. Rosie used county resources to send ’em. That was reviewed in the previous post and my estimation that Rosie doesn’t believe rules pertain to him.

Add rules of evidence to that. Rosie has to show up in court for a contempt hearing because he, get this, was allegedly caught trying to delete those very same emails… even after a subpeona was issued for the emails. Shouldn’t a DA know that destroying evidence is a no-no? But wait, there’s more! Rosie is going to represent himself at the hearing. I wonder if Rosie thinks he’s good enough to play football with Michael Vick? Click here for the video report.

UPDATE: Rosie cannot even figure out how to quit the race properly. He may have botched the withdrawal notification, meaning that the folks who threw in their hats cannot run and that Rodie is still in the game.

“Y’All Fat And Y’All Eat Too Much”

When is an all you can eat buffet for one price not so much? When it’s Manchuria Restaurant in Houma, Louisiana. Ricky Labit, 6 foot 3 inch 277 pounds, took his wife’s cousin to dine. They got charged double by the proprietor who said “Y’all fat, and y’all eat too much”. Now they’re banned, too.

Hollywood Wants Your PC

Or at least control over your spiffy new HD monitor. The original story was here, but the server got overloaded.  Essentially, the point is that the DRM weenies in Hollywood will not rest until every device is under their thumb, regardless of what you have paid for and what gets zapped along the way.  Thank goodness that BoingBoing got a piece of it:

I recently purchased a new HD monitor, but when I installed it, I lost the streaming capabilities on Netflix’s website. When I tried to troubleshoot the issue, I had to agree to let Netflix “reset my DRM” by destroying my Amazon.com files. After talking with Netflix’s technical support, I learned that the real issue had to do with the HD capabilities of my PC setup. Because Hollywood wants to punish people for using technology that is outside of their protocol, they are denying me access to low resolution internet videos until I downgrade my monitor to standard definition.

As if DRM isn’t evil enough already, I now have to give up access to files I’ve already bought and even then might not be allowed access unless I have specific approved HD equipment that allows Hollywood to control how I consume my media content. I understand that content owners want to be able to charge for their content, but something is wrong when their DRM won’t even allow you to pay to use their product.
