Never Guarantee a Win

Pittsburgh Steeler safety Anthony Smith guaranteed that his team would win against the undefeated New England Patriots. The level of hubris and stupidy boggles the mind. Let’s take a little inventory, shall we? As I said, the Pats are undefeated. They’re gunning for the perfect season so that those geezers in Miami can stop celebrating every year with Champagne when the last undefeated team stumbles. The Pats find a way to win. Pittsburgh is very good when they are good, but they are not very consistent. Oh, and Anthony Smith ain’t all that. He got burned not once, but twice on two long scoring throws. Even Pat’s coach Bill Belichick, who rarely criticizes opponents publicly, took a shot at the second-year pro: “We’ve played against a lot better safeties than him.” A guarantee like this becomes a rallying point in the locker room and winds up usually guaranteeing that the opposite thing will happen. I guess it could have been worse.
