Mad Wiretapping Skillz

For the most part, the ability to legally eavesdrop on somebody else’s US telephone conversation requires a court order. That is pretty much considered general knowledge. But what most folks do not realize is how easy it is to start listening once that order is given.

The FBI has quietly built a sophisticated, point-and-click surveillance system that performs instant wiretaps on almost any communications device, according to nearly a thousand pages of restricted documents newly released under the Freedom of Information Act. The surveillance system, called DCSNet, for Digital Collection System Network, connects FBI wiretapping rooms to switches controlled by traditional land-line operators, internet-telephony providers and cellular companies. It is far more intricately woven into the nation’s telecom infrastructure than observers suspected.

Feel better now?

Dodging Bullets

Texas seems to be getting lucky this hurricane season. Dean blew up to a category 5 storm and decided to jack with a relatively unpopulated area of Mexico (never mind that it barreled through the Caribbean). Then Felix showed up. It, too, has grown into a category 5 monster and is threatening the Yucatan again. At first, the models showed that this storm could curve northward after hitting the Gulf of Mexico and maybe jack with Texas. Nope. Central Mexico is squarely in the cross hairs. Oh, and at the same time, tropical storm Henrietta is spinning up to hurricane status on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. The only good thing about all of this is that desert bloom is an amazing sight.
