Flood Insurance

You buy a house. You buy homeowner’s insurance. Floods are generally not covered. As a matter of fact, if you live in a flood-prone area, it’s going to be made perfectly clear that you ain’t covered for floods and that you need to get specific flood insurance if you want that specific coverage. This is especially true for areas that are actually BELOW sea-level, like New Orleans. And now, the 5th Circuit Court has ruled that insurance companies have no obligation to provide coverage that was specifically excluded in the policies. I feel sorry for everyone that was affected by the storm. However, I see no need to reward stupidity. If you don’t carry insurance, you assume the risk.

Busted!

Most folks are hard-working individuals. Sure, there are folks who believe that they are somehow “owed” something and live on government largess for their entire lives… But scam artists really frost my cajones. Why? Because there just aint no such thing as a free lunch. Somebody has to pay for it eventually. The picture, above, is of a Florida woman. It’s a still from a video that is available with the full story here about how she deliberately set up a slip and fall scam in a grocery store. The store manager sums it up pretty well regarding publicizing the video footage: “…because she’s going to try to sue me, sue the store for whatever happened, so I have to make sure everybody knows this is a fraud.”

Everyone pays for the cost of jerks like this in the form of higher retail prices to cover the cost of higher insurance. I say that she should be locked up with the rest of the criminals. And before anyone says that this is a victimless crime, I say bullshit. Sticking it to the man always has a victim: you and me. We all foot the bill for fraud.

Bad Penn Good Penn

Which one do you think I have more respect for? One gets praised by Hugo Chavez… One tells the truth no matter who it offends. One grandstands in the midst of a natural disaster and flaunts laws. The other is an ardent defender of the Bill of Rights. Both are still pretty good entertainers, too, but I’d much rather have one at the dinner table with me…
