Hey, I’m Quoted!

In a previous life, I spent an awful lot of effort and energy in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)business. I still keep tabs on it and find myself quoted in today’s MorningNewsBeat:

On the subject of Wal-Mart’s cutting of price on selected generic prescription drugs, MNB user Jeff Folloder observed:

It’s going to be very interesting to see how this plays out. What kind of impact will occur with Wal-Mart and some of its competitors discounting approximately 300 generic medications? My gut (for which I sometimes take prescription meds) tells me that this is a merely a PR stunt. Have you looked at the Physician’s Desk Reference lately? There’s a whole lot more than 300 medications listed there. I suspect that 300 meds covers only a very small percentage of the prescriptions written. So now folks that are trying to save money wind up having to go to multiple places (wasting time and resources) in chasing down savings. And like the Walgreen’s statement mentioned, having prescription records spread among multiple locations will compromise patient safety.

The whole plan smacks of Wal-Mart trying to garner press for appearing to do “something” about health care and some of their competitors willing to say “me too”. If the folks in Bentonville were serious about the price of prescription medications, they would bring the same pricing pressure to bear on pharma that they have brought on CD and DVD manufacturers. Come to think of it, why haven’t they done this already?

More Air Show Stuff

As I mentioned, I spent Sunday at the Wings Over Houston air show. It was a fantastic static line display of military fixed and rotary wing aircraft, including an F-117 Stealth, a B-52, F15’s, A-10, F-16’s, FA-18’s, an Osprey, an Orion, helicopters, and a ton of cargo jets. A great aerial display went off with tons of WWII re-enactments, modern military, and the Air Force Thunderbirds. Here’s a picture that my buddy snapped of me with the nose cannon of an A10, the GAU-8 Avenger Gatling gun. 7 barrels of 30mm Gatling gun goodness. I want to have one of these things mounted on the roof of my Chevrolet TrailBlazer…

Online Gambling

On Oct. 13 a measure restricting Internet gambling was signed into law by the President of the United States. Its aim to stop the flow of $6 billion that U.S. gamblers spend each year on foreign Internet casinos. But now online gamers are going underground to keep those cards hot.

As George F. Will wrote in his The Last Word column in the October 23 edition of Newsweek, Prohibition II is about as misguided as the first experiment (I paraphrased). Legislating morality is always as effective as collecting water with a sieve. Silly politicians…
