What would you say about this “radical” new policy/plan? Entire families would be expelled if their children are convicted of a violent crime, drug offenses or benefits fraud. The policy would apply only to immigrants, presumably legal an not. Oh, it’s not the US. It’s Switzerland. And yes, the plan is similar to the Nazi kin liability program from WWII, Stalin’s purges of the Soviet Union, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
Does it smack of xenophobia? Certainly. But let us look at the underlying issues. People want to immigrate to another country because of a perceived benefit in the country that they want to go to. That’s cool. But enjoying those benefits actually should carry an agreement to be law-abiding. I’m thinking that booting the whole family is a bit extreme. But if you want to enjoy the priveledge of living in a new country, you should be held accountable to a standard. Certainly, if you are an illegal immigrant, you should be deported if you break a law. Why shouldn’t the same hold true for legal immigrants? A natural citizen gets to spend time in jail for breaking the law. Why spend more money on jailing an immigrant? Hmm… could this apply to all countries?
